Red Dawn (the remake) I just watched it for the first time. It wasn't half bad. MILES better than the old one.

What are you, 10?!?!?!
Red Dawn (the original) was basically The Outsiders with lots of guns fighting the Russians, which we all know equals AWESOMENESS!*
*I have not actually seen the new one, so you may be 100% correct. I just felt like having an old man "get off my lawn"moment.

The old one is awesome in the same way that thundercats is awesome. That is, in memory and not when you actually watch it.

Yeah, that is why I don't go back and watch a lot of those movies I saw growing up. I'm afraid they will now suck...

Red Dawn(the original, I haven't seen the remake) is great in a cult clsssic sort of way, like a Delorean. Poor execution can be forgiven sometimes when the end result has so much awesome.

Red Dawn (2012) has one of the lowest ratings ever recorded on RottenTomatoes.com: 12% of critics approve, 53% of the audience.
A studio PR rep might say, "The majority of viewers like our film! Who cares what some silly, artsy-fartsy critics say?"
To be honest, I haven't seen it, largely because I've heard and read that it's a dud, and in no way compares to the original. And didn't I read somewhere how the original writer/director disclaimed all involvement in the remake as not something he wanted to associate with?
The original was bad too - but bad in a very epic, cheezy 1980s Cold War kind of way. I was a kid when it came out, and to this day I remember my history teacher saying it was inaccurate because Soviet paratroopers wouldn't gun down an unarmed teacher who clearly wanted to parley (which I'd like to think is true).
Due its content its now more than just a movie, its a cultural artifact that future historians will note, just as they do today about, say, The Riddle of the Sands (written in 1903, about a German plot to invade England).
The cast is also interesting, for in 1984 these actors were very young and almost unknown: Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Patrick Swayze.
TLDR: Watch the original.

Really? Interesting. I never saw the old one, I might have to eventually cause now everyone is talking about it.

Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey, Lea Thompson, Henry Dean Stanton, C Thomas Howell, a movie that was actually relevant to the times, showed genuine emotion and had a realistic ending. I think you need to rematch the original.

The old one was way better than the new one - the producer had the guts to call out America's real enemies at the time (Those Godless Commie Soviets and their Cuban Cronies). Excellent blend of Cold War/Reagan paranoia, epic western cowboy flick revenge themes, coming-of-age, patriotic sacrifice and military-gear porn all rolled into one! The new one got censored by our chicken-shit Hollyweenie establishment in a major kowtow to our new Chinese overlords.

I'll second that. I don't know if it's better than the original just because of the nostalgia, but still, everything was better than expected!
